DETAIL INFORMATION ABOUT MEDIA CATEGORIES
BBQ Publication

Instructional Writing with Recipe Includes magazine, newspaper or similar. 

Articles may be any length, and may focus on news, entertainment (including humor), instruction or other subjects. 
Judging Criteria: The entries are judged on mastery of language, depth of thought and research, clarity and coherence of ideas, resonance with the reader, originality, and focus. 

Publication of the Year (hardcopy) 

Includes magazine, newspaper, periodical or similar.  Entrants may submit up to three issues from 2018 for the judges' consideration.
Judging Criteria: Publications are judged on ability to engage the targeted audience, mastery of language, clarity of purpose, ease of use, overall design, photography, organization, and originality.  

BBQ Book of the Year 

Includes any BBQ cookbook publish in the year 2018. BBQ books may or may not include recipes and be released in any country. 
Judging Criteria: Books are judged on ability to engage the targeted audience, mastery of language, clarity of purpose, ease of use, overall design, photography, organization, and originality.  


BBQ Digital Categories

BBQ Blog

Includes solely a blog, or a blog as part of a larger website. A blog authored by a single person, either as an independent entity or an extension of an existing media brand, OR a blog authored by a group of individuals, either as an independent entity or an extension of an existing media brand. 

Judging Criteria: Blogs are judged on mastery of language, clarity of purpose, ease of use, overall design, photography, organization, and originality. Entrants must submit three URLs for specific pages/posts for the judges' consideration, although the entirety of the site will be considered.

BBQ Webpage

Includes, product, produce, personality, e-commerce or similar
A BBQ-related online webpage that is produced by one or more individuals. To differentiate from a blog, entrants in this category are more likely to be database driven rather than simply organized by post or in a journal format. The focus of the site may be primarily news, information, entertainment, and may also be a product or retail site. The site may or may not contain recipes.

Judging Criteria: Sites are judged on mastery of language, clarity of purpose, ease of use, overall design, photography, organization, and originality. Entrants must submit three URLs for specific pages/stories for the judges' consideration, although the entirety of the site will be considered.

BBQ Audio Series

Includes radio, podcast or similar
A series is defined as a minimum of six audio programs that originally were broadcast within 2018. Each individual audio broadcast may be of any length. Three episodes must be submitted for consideration. 

Judging Criteria: Entries are judged on the ability to engage the targeted audience, production quality, information and entertainment value, depth of research, originality, and overall excellence.

BBQ Video Series

Includes, YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, television or similar
A series is defined as a minimum of six video programs that originally were broadcast within 2018. Each individual video may be of any length. Three episodes must be submitted for consideration.

Judging Criteria: Entries are judged on the ability to engage the targeted audience, production quality, information and entertainment value, depth of research, originality, and overall excellence.

Single BBQ Focused Video

Includes, feature film, an episode from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook or similar
Video may be any length, and may focus on news, entertainment (including humor), instruction or other subjects. While submissions to this category may have been part of a series, please note that any video entered as one of the sample links in the BBQ Video Series is not eligible to be re-entered into this category.

Judging Criteria: Entries are judged on the ability to engage the targeted audience, production quality, information and entertainment value, depth of research, originality, and overall excellence.

Single BBQ Focus Article

Articles may be any length, and may focus on news, entertainment (including humor), instruction or other subjects. While submissions to this category may have been part of a blog or webpage, please note that any article entered as one of the sample pages in the BBQ Blog or Webpage category is not eligible to be re-entered into this category.

Judging Criteria: The entries are judged on mastery of language, depth of thought and research, clarity and coherence of ideas, resonance with the reader, originality, and focus.


BBQ Photography Categories

Commercial Photograph 

Includes any photographs that are commissioned and used in any advertising or marketing campaign, print or online, or in product packaging, collateral, or on a corporate or business website throughout 2018.
Judging Criteria: Photos are judged on ability to engage the targeted audience, technical quality, composition, originality and artistic merit.  

BBQ Blog/Personal Photograph 

Includes any non-paid for photograph shared on a blog, webpage or social media throughout 2018.
Judging Criteria: 
Photos are judged on ability to engage the targeted audience, technical quality, composition, originality and artistic merit.  

BBQ Character Photo 

Includes cooking, joints/restaurants, characters, competitions and similar in 2018.
Judging Criteria: 
Photos are judged on ability to engage the targeted audience, technical quality, composition, originality and artistic merit.  

BBQ Food Photo 

Includes any image where the food is the topic and accounts for 70+ of the image taken in 2018.
Judging Criteria: 
Photos are judged on ability to engage the targeted audience, technical quality, composition, originality and artistic merit.  

Live Fire Cooking Photo 

Includes any image where the fire is the topic and accounts for 70+ of the image taken in 2018.
Judging Criteria: Photos are judged on ability to engage the targeted audience, technical quality, composition, originality and artistic merit.

Awards Presentation

Results will be announced during the Awards of Excellence ceremony on Thursday, April 4th @ 6:30 PM CST and posted online shortly thereafter. The ceremony will take place at the 29th NBBQA Conference (April 3, 2019 - April 6, 2019) at  All entrants are encouraged to attend the conference to accept potential awards in person, be recognized by peers, and take advantage of official photo and press release opportunities. However, you do not need to be present to win. Awards will be mailed to winning entrants who are not able to receive them in person. First, second and third place winners in each category receive medals (gold, silver, and bronze) along with custom award certificates. Fourth and fifth-place finishers are also awarded certificates. All winners are linked on the NBBQA website, published in the National Barbecue News and recognized in an official NBBQA press release. Winners are also entitled to showcase the Awards of Excellence and NBBQA logos on the labels, publications, and websites of winning products.
